How to Remove VAT from a Price
Remove VAT from a UK VAT-inclusive price using the standard formula, see when retail prices already include VAT, and know when reduced or zero-rated items need a different rate.
Confirm the price includes VAT
Shelf labels and some business quotes show prices before VAT, with VAT added later. Consumer-facing totals in many UK retail contexts already include VAT. If you are unsure, read the subtotal lines on the receipt before you divide.
Use the VAT-inclusive price formula
Let r be the VAT rate as a decimal. Net price equals gross divided by (1 + r), and VAT equals gross minus net. You can use the calculator result as a quick check against your own math.
Watch for reduced or zero rates
Food, books, or medical categories can carry reduced rates or exemptions. If you apply the standard formula to a reduced-rate line, you will misstate both net and VAT. When in doubt, split each line item by its applicable rate before you add the totals together.

FAQ
- What formula removes VAT from a gross price?
- Divide the VAT-inclusive price by 1 plus the VAT rate expressed as a decimal. For 20% VAT, divide by 1.20. The VAT amount equals the gross price minus the net price.
- Is UK VAT removal different from EU VAT removal mathematically?
- The formula is the same whenever VAT is included in the displayed price. The main difference is which rate applies—standard, reduced, or zero—and whether special cross-border rules apply.
- Which CalcLook tool should I open first?
- Use the UK reverse VAT calculator when you want the UK standard rate as a starting point, or the reverse tax calculator when you already know the exact VAT percentage.
