Formula
How reverse tax calculation works
When a receipt shows one tax-inclusive total, divide that total by 1 plus the rate as a decimal. That gives you the amount before tax.
Pre-tax Price = Total Price / (1 + Tax Rate)
Tax Amount = Total Price - Pre-tax Price
Example
$108.00 with 8% tax included
- Tax multiplier = 1 + 8% = 1.08
- Pre-tax price = 108 / 1.08 = 100.00
- Tax amount = 108.00 - 100.00 = 8.00
FAQ
Common questions
How do you reverse calculate tax?
Divide the tax-inclusive total by 1 plus the tax rate. For example, with a 20% tax rate, divide the total by 1.20.
What is the reverse tax formula?
Pre-tax price = total price / (1 + tax rate). Tax amount = total price - pre-tax price.
Is this calculator tax advice?
No. This is an educational calculator for estimates. Confirm official rates and rules before filing, invoicing, or relying on the result.
How do I remove sales tax from a total?
Divide the total by 1 plus the sales tax rate expressed as a decimal. That gives you the amount before tax; subtract it from the total to find the tax amount.
Is removing tax the same as taking a percent off?
No. Taking a percent off the total treats the tax as a percentage of the tax-inclusive amount. Use division by (1 + rate) because the tax was calculated on the amount before tax.
Can I use this for VAT-inclusive prices?
Yes, if a single VAT rate applies to the whole amount. For mixed rates, split each line before removing tax.
I only see the grand total on my receipt—what do I enter?
Use that figure as the tax-inclusive amount, then enter the combined rate that actually applied to the sale. If the receipt shows tax as a separate line, you can still verify by dividing the grand total by 1 plus the rate.
What is the difference between gross and pre-tax on a receipt?
Gross, or tax-inclusive, is what you paid at the register. Pre-tax is the amount before sales tax was added; this calculator solves for that amount when you know the combined rate.
