Formula

How reverse tax calculation works

For a US total that already includes sales tax, treat the amount you see as tax-inclusive. Divide by 1 plus the combined state and local sales tax rate to separate the amount before tax from the tax amount.

Pre-tax Price = Total Price / (1 + Tax Rate)

Tax Amount = Total Price - Pre-tax Price

Example

$113.88 with 9.25% combined sales tax

  1. Tax multiplier = 1 + 9.25% = 1.0925
  2. Pre-tax price = 113.88 / 1.0925 = 104.24
  3. Sales tax amount = 113.88 - 104.24 = 9.64

FAQ

Common questions

How do you reverse calculate tax?

Divide the tax-inclusive total by 1 plus the tax rate. For example, with a 20% tax rate, divide the total by 1.20.

What is the reverse tax formula?

Pre-tax price = total price / (1 + tax rate). Tax amount = total price - pre-tax price.

Is this calculator tax advice?

No. This is an educational calculator for estimates. Confirm official rates and rules before filing, invoicing, or relying on the result.

What does sales tax inclusive mean?

It means the displayed total already contains sales tax. You cannot read the pre-tax amount without dividing by 1 plus the combined rate.

Should I enter state-only or combined local rates?

Enter the combined rate that actually applied to the sale. Many US locations add local sales tax on top of the state rate.

Where can I learn the underlying formula?

Read the guide What is the reverse sales tax formula? for a short explanation with a US-style example, or open the tax-inclusive pricing guide for broader context.

Why is my combined sales tax rate higher than the state rate alone?

Many cities and counties add local sales tax on top of the statewide figure. Your receipt should reflect that higher combined percentage when tax is included in the total.

What if the receipt rounds each line before adding tax?

Line-by-line rounding can shift pennies compared with taxing the subtotal once. This calculator assumes one combined rate on one total—use your sales system or invoice rounding method when pennies matter.
